A brief update (i.e., bragging time) from Texas:
Cameron was just named the Outstanding Student for the past nine weeks at Chisholm Trail Middle School. I'm not sure if that's for sixth graders, or for the whole school, but either way it's pretty cool. He's also learning to pick "Love One Another" on the guitar, for a ward youth talent show, and he will be awarded his Tenderfoot at next week's Court of Honor. Also, big announcement: there are the very slightest hints that he is starting to get a little interested in girls. He went to his first school dance last week, and reports that he had a good time. Man, how old are we all getting?
Megan won a bunch of awards at this morning's assembly -- a couple for straight A's and one for "Respect." Of course, yesterday she had to stay after school for failing a test, so there was a touch of irony in the air. The reading bug still has hold of her -- she can't put her book down (whatever the latest one might be) to do anything else, including her chores or other homework. She has started rollerblading, though, and will go outside to do that whenever she's not reading. (By the way, it's been an extremely mild "winter" here. Yesterday it was 80 degrees.)
Jackson has a new best friend -- dang, I can't remember his name offhand -- but they have gone back and forth to each other's house for play dates lately. He's a friend from kindergarten, not from the ward, and they absolutely love each other. Non-stop laughs together. It's pretty funny to watch. Jack's also reading more lately, but still loves the Legos and playing games on Lego.com. We have a graduation trip planned for Disneyland and Legoland in May (after school ends and before my bar-prep course begins), and Jack can't wait. It just so happens that the trip coincides with his birthday (May 8th) -- so he thinks it's all about him.
Sophia took a tiny step yesterday, but I'm not sure we can really say she's "taking her first steps" yet. She's still extremely active, but not quite ready to start walking -- which is ok, because it's still really early. The big thing with Soapers lately is her relationship with Miss Joyce, our nextdoor neighbor and Sophie's "Nextdoor Grandma." Miss Joyce (yes, this title is a holdover from old-style Southern etiquette down here) is in her 70s and she adores little Soapers -- so much that she is constantly trying to sneak her Diet Pepsi and ice cream and whatever other junkfood she can find. Sophie loves it, of course, but it's been a mild source of frustration for Michele, who has tried as politely as possible to hint that we don't really want Sophie to eat that stuff just yet.
In other news, we have now been without a washer and dryer for three months. Our dryer went out in November. We bought a new set at Sears on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving), in a great sale they were having -- but it turns out the sale was so great that they oversold by several thousand units. They've been trying to catch up with the orders ever since, so we've been waiting for our pair for months. They're supposed to come this weekend -- so cross your fingers! Doing laundry at Miss Joyce's and other friends' homes has been a royal pain in the hiney....
That's it for now, I suppose. Sure would like to see some updates from the other Steed satellites around the Steed universe!
